Governor Biodun Oyebanji has appointed Justice Lekan Ogunmoye as the acting Chief Judge, following the recent passing of Justice Oyewole Adeyeye. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday in Ado Ekiti, marking a solemn but essential transition for the state’s judiciary.
Justice Ogunmoye steps into the role following the death of Justice Adeyeye on November 4, 2024. Governor Oyebanji, during the brief ceremony, stressed the importance of maintaining an uninterrupted judicial process, stating that “nature abhors a vacuum.” He cited his constitutional authority under Section 271 (4) of the Nigerian Constitution (as amended) as the basis for the swift appointment.
Addressing Justice Ogunmoye, Oyebanji extended his congratulations but reminded him of the challenging responsibility he now carries. He urged the new acting Chief Judge to bring his skills, commitment, and experience to this role, to “lead the judiciary during this moment of transition with humility, brotherly solidarity, and experience.”
“I have no doubt about your competency and leadership acumen; I, therefore, charge you to lead the judiciary during this moment of transition with humility, brotherly solidarity, and experience.”
“I also want to urge you to reflect deeply on the oath you have just taken, which commits you to discharge your duties to the best of your ability and faithfulness, in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated.
Oyebanji reflected on the death of the former Chief Judge, saying, “On 4 November 2024, Ekiti lost a rare gem, a perfect gentleman, and an epitome of judicial integrity, Justice Adeyeye, a distinguished Chief Judge of Ekiti State, who died in active service.
“He was a dedicated and respected jurist, who throughout his life dedicated himself to upholding the rule of law and ensuring access to justice. He will always be remembered for his contributions to the development of justice in our dear state. His legacy of honesty, professionalism, and erudition as a judge will never be forgotten.”
In his response, Justice Ogunmoye expressed deep gratitude for the appointment and affirmed his commitment to upholding judicial fairness and efficiency.
Acknowledging the support he has received from the Oyebanji administration, Ogunmoye pledged to build upon the legacy left by his predecessors, particularly by pursuing advancements in digitalizing the judiciary for more efficient operations. He also called for ongoing collaboration and support from the government to enhance the justice sector’s reach and the welfare of its workers.
