The Minister, Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday said he has no regrets going after influential Nigerians over unpaid ground rents, adding that challenging powerful individuals gives him personal satisfaction.
Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, Wike made it clear that he would not be intimidated by the elite or pressured into stopping the enforcement of ground rent payments. He pointed out that in other countries, even the most privileged people obey the law, but that is often not the case in Nigeria.
“These are people who travel abroad and see how things work,” Wike noted. “But when they return, they act like they’re above the law. That won’t happen here.”
The FCT Minister explained that property owners in the Federal Capital Territory must settle their ground rent obligations, regardless of their social or political status. According to him, the law is clear, and it must be followed by everyone.
