A deadly attack by suspected armed herders has left six people dead in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack took place on Saturday at Tse Ugema Chul, Mbakesa, Ugbaam, a few kilometers from Zaki Biam, the headquarters of Ukum LGA.
A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told reporters over the phone that at least seven bodies had been found so far, while several others remained missing.
Reports indicate that the violence began when some local youths tried to drive away cattle that had entered their farmland and destroyed crops, particularly yams. While attempting to chase the animals away, the youths were ambushed by unknown gunmen who opened fire on them.
The source explained, “While the youths were going after the cattle, unknown gunmen who laid ambush opened fire and killed some of the youths. As of Saturday evening, six bodies have been recovered.”
The attack has caused panic in the community, with many residents fearing further violence. Some families are still searching for missing loved ones, while others are mourning the dead.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue State Command, CSP Catherine Anene, said she had not yet received an official report about the incident from Ukum.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ukum Local Government, Mr. Jonathan Modi, confirmed the attack but said he was too distressed to speak in detail about the situation.
He stated, “I just can’t talk about the issue. I am in Zaki Biam right now—in pain about what happened in Zaki Biam. Even right now, if the governor called me to speak on the situation, I will tell him I can’t speak on the phone unless I see him face-to-face. So, please don’t be offended. I’m in pain, thanks.”
