Gunmen Attack Church in Kebbi, Abduct Worshippers During Sunday Service

Gunmen believed to be members of the notorious Lakurawa gang stormed Zagami village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on Sunday, abducting several Christian worshippers during a church service.

According to local sources, the armed men arrived early in the morning while worshippers were gathered inside a church for Sunday service. Witnesses said the attackers rode into the village on motorcycles and began firing gunshots into the air, sending people into panic and confusion. They then surrounded the church building and forced their way inside.

A survivor of the incident, Mr. Ezekiel Danjuma, who narrowly escaped, described the moment as chaotic and terrifying. “It was terrifying. They came shooting and forced their way into the church. Some of us managed to escape through the back, but they took many people with them,” Danjuma said.

The attackers reportedly led an unknown number of worshippers into the nearby forest. As of the time this report was filed, there has been no official confirmation of how many people were taken.

Zagami is a quiet, rural farming community located in the Kebbi South Senatorial District, which includes seven local government areas: Danko/Wasagu, Fakai, Ngaski, Sakaba, Shanga, Yauri, and Zuru. The attack has left the community shaken, with many residents expressing fear and uncertainty about their safety.

Security agencies have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. However, concerned residents are urging the Kebbi State Government and federal security forces to take swift action to secure the release of the abducted worshippers.

Community leaders in Zagami also called for more protection in remote villages, noting that the region has seen a rise in attacks and kidnappings by armed groups in recent years. Many locals believe that the remoteness of the area makes it an easy target for criminals.
