Gunmen, on Friday, attacked Ogbaru Local Government Area secretariat in Anambra State, causing significant damage to buildings and properties within the complex.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in large numbers and began firing, resulting in extensive destruction at the council’s headquarters.
Despite the severity of the attack, it was confirmed that no lives were lost. The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, provided an update on the situation, stating, “The attack was on Ogbaru LGA in the early hours of today, 30/8/2024. Security operatives gallantly resisted the gunmen, but some LGA properties were destroyed, some buildings were also affected, but no lives were lost.”
Currently, a joint security operation is ongoing in the area to secure the location and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and there is no official confirmation on the identity of the assailants.
This is not the first time the Ogbaru Local Government headquarters has been targeted by gunmen. In a previous attack, buildings and vehicles within the premises were set ablaze, raising concerns over the repeated assaults on the facility. Though no group has claimed responsibility for these attacks, there is speculation that secessionist elements may be involved.
