Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on a security facility in Umunze, a town located in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The target was a base operated by the Agunechemba Security Network, a local security outfit supported by the Anambra State government.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the facility in the early hours of Thursday, catching the vigilante operatives off guard. In the surprise attack, five patrol vehicles were set on fire, and the building housing the security group was also damaged by flames. One member of the team was reportedly killed during the shooting, while other operatives at the scene fled to escape the onslaught.
Umunze, which has seen repeated violent attacks in recent months, lies near the border of Anambra and another southeastern state. Security sources believe that the attackers might have crossed into Anambra from that neighboring area, which has been linked to earlier violent incidents.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack and said efforts are ongoing to bring the criminals to justice. He called on local residents to help the police with any useful information.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, also responded to the attack, describing it as “unacceptable and unfortunate.” He noted that the support of the community will be key in finding the attackers. He added that the police are working closely with other security agencies to track those involved.
A joint security force has since taken over the area, and investigators are combing the scene for evidence. The police command noted, “Investigation is ongoing and further developments will be communicated as more information becomes available.”
