Armed men attacked a mosque in the Bushe community of Sabon Birni Local Government Area in Sokoto State, abducting several worshippers during their early morning Subhi prayer.
The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the incident. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, spoke with journalists on Friday, assuring the public that security forces were making efforts to rescue the victims.
“I just confirmed the incident from the DPO of the community when I spoke with him on the telephone. I want to assure you that the Nigeria Police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are working tirelessly to ensure the immediate release of all the abductees,” Rufai stated.
Local sources reported that the attack took place at dawn on Thursday. The gunmen entered the mosque while prayers were ongoing and took away at least 10 worshippers, including the Imam. The number of abducted individuals may rise as investigations continue.
A resident of Bushe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that this was not the first attack on the community. He mentioned that despite the presence of security forces, including troops from Operation Fasan Yamma under the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, the area remained vulnerable to such assaults.
A Sokoto State House of Assembly member representing the area, Sa’idu Ibrahim, also confirmed the abduction, stating that at least 10 people were taken. He acknowledged the efforts of security forces, noting that their presence prevented a larger-scale abduction.
The attack has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in Sokoto State, particularly in Sabon Birni LGA, where banditry and kidnapping have been recurrent issues. Residents are calling for stronger security measures to protect communities from further violence.
