A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025, when gunmen attacked a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko, Ogun State. The attack resulted in the death of Prophet Yomi Adetula, aged 54.
The gunmen, believed to be three in number, stormed the CCC Eagle Parish located on Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko, during a Sunday service around 10:30 AM.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, armed with long double-barrel guns, aimed directly at Prophet Adetula, who seemed to be the primary target. Without hesitation, they opened fire, shooting the prophet multiple times.
“Police officers raced to the scene and saw on Yomi Adetula, ‘M’, aged 54 years lifeless in the pool of blood which stained his white celestial garment lying face up.
“On careful observation, his body was riddled with bullets and his head was not speared… to ensure the victim was really dead, it was mangled with axe.
“On police inquiry, information further gathered that three men came into the church, brought out long double barrel gun aimed at their target and fire a shot that brought the deceased down,” she said.
The gunmen reportedly fled the scene immediately after carrying out the attack, disappearing into the nearby border area.
The police were quick to respond and have since launched an investigation to apprehend the suspects. The deceased’s body was later transported to the General Hospital Morgue in Ilaro for further examination.
Police Spokesperson Odutola assured the public that efforts are underway to identify and arrest the assailants.
“Normalcy has been restored while possible clues will be revealed in the coming days as an investigation has been launched into the very sad occurrence,” she stated.
