Gunmen Kill Miyetti Allah Chairman in Kwara

Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Kwara State, was shot dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday evening. The attack took place at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi, as he was returning home late at night.

A spokesperson for MACBAN in the state confirmed the tragic incident, explaining that the attack occurred around 10 p.m. He stated, “He is coming back home late at night; then they attack him when entering his house, they open fire on him. That’s all we can say now.”

The Kwara State Police Command also confirmed the incident through a statement released by its spokesperson, SP Ejire Adetoun. The police noted that they recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the crime scene and have launched an investigation to track down those responsible.

The statement from the police reads: “The Kwara State Police Command confirms the murder of Alhaji Idris Abubakar, the Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Kwara State, who was shot dead on 8th March 2025 at the entrance of his residence in Oke Ose, Oke-Oyi. The police assured the public that efforts were underway to apprehend the perpetrators, with Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya urging residents to remain calm and provide any useful information that could aid the investigation.

Meanwhile, MACBAN’s Kwara State chapter has expressed deep shock over the killing. In a statement signed by its state secretary, AbdulAzeez Muhammed, the Fulani leader in Kwara, Alhaji Ojonla Mahmud, urged security agencies to act swiftly in tracking down the attackers and bringing them to justice.

The statement further called on the state government to support the deceased’s family by ensuring his children receive quality education and proper welfare.

The burial of Alhaji Idris Abubakar Sakaina took place on Sunday morning in the Zango area of Ilorin, with many community members, colleagues, and sympathizers present to pay their last respects.

Reports suggest that the killing may be linked to MACBAN’s active role in assisting security forces and local hunters in the fight against kidnappers and criminal activities in the state. The association has reportedly played a key role in the rescue of kidnap victims and efforts to curb terrorism.
