President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of Nigerian football legend, Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday at the age of 74. The president described Chukwu as a national treasure whose life and achievements brought pride and happiness to countless Nigerians.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu noted that Chukwu’s influence stretched far beyond the football pitch. He praised the former Super Eagles captain and coach for his deep passion and unwavering dedication to the sport and the country.
Chukwu was a central figure in Nigerian football history. As the captain of the Green Eagles, he led the team to victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Years later, as a coach, he guided the Super Eagles to a bronze finish in the 2004 AFCON tournament. His leadership and calm demeanor earned him the nickname “Chairman,” a title that reflected his command and presence on the field.
His entire club career was spent with Enugu Rangers, where he not only helped secure multiple domestic titles but also led the team to win the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977. That victory remains one of the most celebrated achievements in Nigerian club football.
President Tinubu noted, “Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism. He brought joy to millions, mentored a generation of footballers, and stood as a pillar of Nigerian brand and sportsmanship on and off the pitch.”
He added that Chukwu’s impact will be remembered through the trophies he won, the players he mentored, and the memories he gave to football fans over the decades. “We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration,” he stated.
Tinubu also offered prayers for Chukwu’s family, wishing them peace and comfort in the face of their loss. He expressed hope that they would find strength in the enduring legacy left behind by a man who dedicated his life to uplifting Nigerian football.
