Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has advised the federal government to prioritize public consultation before passing any tax reform legislation. He emphasized that while tax reform is vital for national growth, rushing the process without involving the public could undermine its effectiveness and acceptance.
In a statement on Monday, Obi underscored the importance of transparency and public participation in policymaking. He argued that tax reform impacts every citizen and, as such, requires open discussions to gather diverse views and insights.
“However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully,” Obi said.
He pointed out that public hearings would not only create a platform for citizens to voice their concerns but also help build trust in the government’s intentions. Obi noted that inclusive policymaking ensures the outcomes align with the needs of the people.
“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed,” he added. “Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs. Such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflected in public policy.”
