Members of the House of Representatives have decided to donate 50% of their salaries for the next six months to tackle the widespread issue of hunger in the nation. This decision was made during a plenary session held on Thursday, marking a collective effort by the lawmakers to alleviate the hunger crisis affecting many citizens.
The session, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, saw Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu take a notable step by proposing an amendment to an ongoing motion. Kalu called on his fellow representatives to join him in giving up half of their salaries for half a year to help those in need. This gesture, he emphasized, was a necessary sacrifice in light of the severe hunger many people are facing.
“This government is doing its best but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months,” Kalu urged during his address.
The proposal received considerable attention and support from the members present. The initiative underscores the lawmakers’ recognition of the urgent need to support the government’s efforts in fighting hunger and shows a personal commitment to the cause.
