The House of Representatives has committed to a detailed examination of the ₦6.2 trillion supplementary budget for 2024, recently submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu. The budget is aimed at funding critical infrastructure projects, improving education, enhancing healthcare, and supporting the welfare of Nigerians, according to Deputy Spokesman Philip Agbese.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Agbese highlighted the parliament’s readiness to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous review of the proposed budget. He detailed that the supplementary budget comprises two main components: ₦3.2 trillion allocated for infrastructure projects and ₦3 trillion designated for recurrent expenditure required for the Federal Government’s operations.
“The 2024 supplementary budget, totaling ₦6.2tn, aims to fund critical infrastructure projects, education, healthcare access, and public welfare initiatives,” Agbese stated.
He emphasized the House’s commitment to scrutinizing every aspect of the budget to guarantee that funds are utilized effectively and in the best interests of their constituents. Agbese assured that the legislative body would engage with various stakeholders, conduct public hearings, and meticulously examine the executive bill to ensure it meets the needs of Nigerians.
“We will not compromise on our commitment to transparency and accountability. We will take the time to get it right, and we are confident that the result will be a budget that benefits all Nigerians,” he added.
Agbese, who represents Ado/Ogbadigbo/Okokwu Federal Constituency of Benue State, expressed confidence in the House’s ability to work collaboratively with the Senate to ensure the supplementary budget is passed efficiently and with the necessary oversight. He stressed that the House would not rush the process, but instead take the time required to conduct a thorough review.
The Deputy Spokesman also acknowledged the contributions of Abubakar Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, praising his commitment to transparency and accountability in the budgetary process. Agbese highlighted Bichi’s extensive experience and dedication, which have been crucial in diligently scrutinizing the budget proposal.
“Bichi’s vast experience in budgetary matters has been invaluable to the committee, and his dedication to ensuring that the budget serves the best interests of Nigerians is commendable. We appreciate his efforts and look forward to working with him to ensure a thorough and transparent review process,” Agbese concluded.
