How PDP Can Survive – Wike

Former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stated that the future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) depends on its ability to follow both its internal constitution and the Nigerian Constitution of 1999.

Wike made this remark during a political gathering in Abuja on Monday, where he met with several key figures of the party, including former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Samuel Ortom of Benue, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia.

Others in attendance included Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who also serves as the PDP National Secretary, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, along with both current and past lawmakers, and various party officials at the state and zonal levels.

Wike described the attendees as committed members of the PDP who are genuinely concerned about the party’s direction and survival. He pointed out that the party’s current issues could have been avoided if it had listened to the advice of the group known as the G5 Governors.

He recalled the role played by the G5 Governors during the last election cycle, saying their advocacy for the rotation of the presidency helped prevent national tension.

“Today, this country is stabilized because of the activities of the G5 Governors. You may like us, you may hate us. The truth of the matter is that if the G5 did not take the decision we took, this country would have been in crisis,” Wike said.

He also questioned the party’s handling of Senator Anyanwu’s case, asking why he was barred from returning to his post as National Secretary after failing to win the Imo State governorship election.

Wike added that real party supporters are those who are active on the ground, not just making statements in the media. He once again urged the PDP to stick to its founding rules.

“If the party had listened to what we said, we wouldn’t have been where we are today, and we have continued to sound it to the party: let the constitution of the party and of the country be respected,” he said.
