Hunger protest: Only identifiable protesters will be allowed, says Anambra CP

Anambra State’s Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has announced stringent measures to ensure the safety and orderliness of the event for the planned nationwide hunger protest set for August 1.

The police chief declared that only protesters who have registered and identified themselves with local police authorities will be permitted to join the demonstration.

Addressing the public in Awka on Friday, CP Itam emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order during the protest. He warned that any form of violence or unlawful activity would be met with strict consequences.

“There is a need to be cautious as some people may attempt to hijack the protest to perpetrate crimes or victimise others, including those who are not involved in the protest,” Itam stated, highlighting potential risks associated with large gatherings.

The Commissioner stressed that while the police respect the citizens’ right to protest, it is imperative that participants follow the rules to ensure their safety and the security of the state. “We are not stopping any law-abiding citizen from protesting, but it must be peaceful and orderly,” he said. “Intended protesters should visit the Command for proper identification. We want those who wish to participate in the August 1 protest to identify themselves properly with the security agencies in the state and also the location where the protest will take place.”

This announcement aligns with the directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who has urged all groups planning to participate in the nationwide protest to submit their details to the Commissioners of Police in their respective states. This measure aims to prevent any potential misuse of the protest by individuals with malicious intentions.

CP Itam assured the public that the police are committed to protecting the lives and property of all residents, reiterating that only identified and registered protesters will be protected during the demonstration. “Our responsibility is to protect the lives and property of every Nigerian irrespective of anywhere he/she resides in Nigeria,” he affirmed.
