“I just laugh when people say I am Igbo” – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has finally addressed the rumors about his alleged Igbo paternity, dismissing them with a light-hearted comment.

Speaking during a visit from the leadership of the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo described the claims as amusing, saying, “It just makes me laugh.”

During the meeting, Obasanjo also shared his views on national unity and the need for inclusiveness across Nigeria. He firmly stated that no one should be excluded from any part of the country, emphasizing that “we own this country together.”

His comments were a reiteration of his belief in national unity, reflecting on past efforts to bring different ethnic groups together, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War.

The focus of the meeting was the development of the Owerri Central Market, a project that has been in the works since the creation of Imo State but has faced delays.

Obasanjo expressed his support for the project, highlighting its potential to become a leading market in Nigeria. He praised the initiative and the involvement of the Imo State governor, expressing confidence that the market would be a significant development for the region.

The spokesperson for the Ndigbo Amaka Progressive Market Association, Chief Emeka Dallas Emmanuel, emphasized the market’s potential to foster innovation and entrepreneurship.

Emmanuel also sought Obasanjo’s support in securing loans for members to purchase spaces within the market, aiming to help reduce street trading and enhance economic opportunities for the community.
