I May Leave PDP to Back Tinubu in 2027 – Segun Sowunmi

A former aide to Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has hinted at a possible shift in political allegiance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowunmi, who once served as a spokesman for Atiku, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), suggested that he may quit the PDP to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

While speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time program on Tuesday, Sowunmi shared his thoughts on his political future and the state of the PDP. He stated that his support for Tinubu would require him to formally join the APC, as he does not believe in supporting a political leader from outside their party.

“If I’m going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party,” Sowunmi said during the live interview. “I don’t believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else.”

He noted that his decision would not be taken lightly, stressing that he has been with the PDP for nearly three decades. According to him, many party members lack such long-standing commitment.

“I have been in PDP for 28 years and most of them don’t even have that record of 28 days,” he said. “If I’m going to leave to support the president, I will damn say that I’m going.”

Sowunmi also voiced his frustration over the current state of the PDP. He said he had repeatedly called for reforms in the party, but his efforts have largely been ignored.

“I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party,” he added.

Looking at the broader political landscape, Sowunmi pointed to developments in his home state and among his ethnic group as key factors that could push him toward leaving the PDP.

“There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave,” he said.
