‘I Remain LP National Chairman’ — Abure Rejects Supreme Court Ruling

Julius Abure, who was removed as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) by a Supreme Court ruling, has openly rejected the decision and continues to insist that he remains the party’s leader.

Abure made his position clear shortly after the ruling on Friday through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he declared, “Barr Julius Abure still Remains The National Chairman of Labour Party.”

This statement came only hours after the Supreme Court overturned a previous judgment by the Court of Appeal in Abuja. The Court of Appeal had earlier ruled in Abure’s favor, allowing him to continue as the LP’s National Chairman.

But the Supreme Court, through a five-member panel, ruled that the appeal court did not have the proper legal authority to make that decision.

The court further noted that the process that led to Abure being recognized by the Court of Appeal as party chairman was flawed due to issues of jurisdiction. With this ruling, the apex court essentially nullified the decision that had previously reinstated Abure.

Meanwhile, the legal battle appears to have shifted in favor of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and another party member, who had filed an appeal against Abure’s recognition. The Supreme Court found their case to have merit and allowed it, further strengthening the position of the LP’s Caretaker Committee.

In response to the court’s decision, the Chairman of the Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee stated that the party’s goal of building a better Nigeria remains unchanged. According to him, the LP leadership is still focused on restructuring the country’s political system and delivering good governance, regardless of the leadership challenges.
