The recent tragedy at a children’s funfair in Ibadan has drawn strong reactions, with the Association of Orphanages and Homes Operators in Nigeria (ASOHON), South-West Zone, demanding stricter safety measures for public events.
The call came after a devastating stampede occurred on Wednesday at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, resulting in the loss of 35 young lives. Speaking in a statement on Saturday, ASOHON South-West Coordinator, Dr. Rosemary Odigbo, urged the authorities to take urgent action to prevent such incidents in the future.
Dr. Odigbo highlighted the need for mandatory safety audits and the implementation of emergency response plans at all public events. She insisted that thorough investigations should be conducted to determine the root causes of the incident and that those responsible must face prosecution for negligence.
“It is unacceptable that negligence continues to cost innocent lives,” Odigbo said. She also called for adequate compensation for the families of the deceased, as well as medical and psychological care for all survivors.
Dr. Odigbo emphasized that this tragedy should be a turning point for how events are planned and regulated in Nigeria. She urged reforms to prioritize public safety, particularly for children, and stressed that the lives of citizens should never be compromised.
“To the grieving families, we extend our deepest condolences. As an organisation, ASOHON stands with you in this difficult time,” she added. “Let this moment drive accountability, reform, and the prioritisation of safety in all public events.”
