Ibadan Tragedy: Oyo State Opposes Bail for Stampede Defendants

The Oyo State High Court witnessed intense legal arguments on Tuesday as the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, opposed a bail application filed for three defendants connected to the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Ibadan.

The incident, which occurred during a funfair event in late 2024, resulted in the deaths of 35 people and left many others injured.

Among the accused are Queen Naomi Shilekunola Ogunseyi, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, a well-known radio presenter; and the school principal, Abdullai Fasasi.

They face charges of negligence and public endangerment for allegedly failing to prevent the overcrowding that led to the disaster.

The defence team argued that their clients are not flight risks and have demonstrated a willingness to cooperate with investigations. However, Barrister Aikomo countered, citing the gravity of the charges and the need to deliver justice for the victims and their grieving families.

Justice Kamarudeen Olawoyin, who presided over the hearing, acknowledged the significance of the case and the high public interest surrounding it. After listening to both sides, he adjourned the ruling on the bail application to January 13, leaving the defendants’ release uncertain for now.

Governor Seyi Makinde has previously stated that justice must be served, emphasizing the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law without interference.
