Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has taken swift action regarding the shooting incident that occurred on July 24, 2024, at a police checkpoint in Itele, Ota, Ogun State.
The unfortunate event happened when police officers, while conducting a routine stop, fired their weapons after a Lexus vehicle attempted to evade the checkpoint. A stray bullet struck 27-year-old Tomiwa Oni Odofa, who was inside the car at the time.
In response, the Ogun State Police Command quickly moved to ensure that Tomiwa received urgent medical treatment. According to a statement released on Saturday by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, she was closely monitored until her discharge from the hospital.
“The officers involved in the incident were identified and underwent thorough disciplinary processes to address their actions,” the statement read.
To further show commitment to justice and accountability, the IGP directed Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, and his team to visit Tomiwa’s family in Ota. The visit was meant to check on her recovery progress and offer reassurance and support to her loved ones during this difficult time.
As part of efforts to aid her recovery, the IGP also ordered that Tomiwa receive immediate psychological evaluation and therapy. The police force has pledged to provide all necessary assistance to ensure her full recovery.
“The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to ensuring that she receives all necessary support to facilitate her complete healing,” the statement added.
The IGP also sent his best wishes to Tomiwa and reaffirmed the police force’s dedication to justice, community welfare, and accountability.
