IGP Withdraws Invitation to Emir Sanusi

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken a new approach in the ongoing investigation related to a tragic event that took place during the recent Sallah celebration in Kano. The initial move to summon the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, has now been withdrawn. Instead, police officers from the Force Intelligence Department have been instructed to visit the Emir in Kano to collect his statement.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this change of plans in an official statement. He explained that the invitation was withdrawn following advice from respected individuals and groups across the country. The decision, according to him, reflects the police leadership’s dedication to fair and professional investigations, avoiding any political interpretations of their actions.

The incident in question took place on March 30, 2025, shortly after the Emir returned from Eid prayers. Though he arrived at the Eid ground in a vehicle, he chose to return to his palace on horseback, a symbolic act in the traditional Durbar procession. He was accompanied by local security volunteers, often known as vigilantes.

However, this act sparked unrest among some youths in the area. A confrontation broke out, leading to the unfortunate death of a man identified as Usman Sagiru and leaving several others injured. Police sources stated that they had previously warned both Alhaji Sanusi and his rival, Alhaji Ado Bayero, about the risk of holding public Durbar processions during this tense period. To prevent violence, both Emirs were reportedly advised not to ride horses or hold separate celebrations on Sallah Day. This decision was reached after discussions involving senior police officials and representatives of the Kano State Government.

The Force now believes that by speaking directly with the Emir in Kano, the investigation can continue in a more peaceful and less politically charged manner. The police also confirmed that several individuals have already been arrested in connection with the violence.

“The Nigeria Police Force has withdrawn its earlier invitation extended to Alhaji Sanusi in connection with the unfortunate incident that occurred in Kano State during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025,” the statement read. “The invitation was initially issued to enable Alhaji Sanusi to provide his account of the events that led to the breakdown of law and order in the state.”

It further noted, “Instead, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been mandated, on the instructions of the IGP, to proceed to Kano to obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s statement.”
