I’m a Member of Labour Party – Peter Obi Insists Despite ADC Coalition Deal

Peter Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP), has made it clear once again that he remains a member of the party, even as he teams up with other political figures under a new coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a recent interview on Channels Television aired on Sunday, Obi addressed rumors that his association with the ADC coalition meant he had abandoned the Labour Party. He firmly stated that he is still with LP and explained that the alliance is part of a broader strategy for the upcoming 2027 general election.

Obi clarified his position, saying, “Today, I’m an LP member and I remain in LP, but we have all agreed to work together in coalition for the 2027 election, and for that, we have adopted ADC.”

This new political alliance has drawn attention, mainly due to the caliber of personalities involved.

Alongside Obi, the coalition features key political heavyweights like former Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi; ex-Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai; former Senate President, David Mark; and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Their collective goal appears to be to build a united front capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next election.

However, Obi’s involvement has not gone without criticism. Julius Abure, who is recognized as a factional chairman of the Labour Party, recently argued that by endorsing ADC as the face of the coalition, Obi and others had effectively left the party. Abure also took aim at Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, accusing him of misleading the public about his political stance and alleging that he had joined the coalition’s caretaker committee.

Abure noted that the Labour Party leadership is taking necessary steps to restructure and prepare the party for the political contest ahead in 2027. He insisted the party would not sit back while members engage in what he described as actions that could weaken its structure.

Meanwhile, although Obi remains publicly committed to Labour Party, others in the coalition such as Amaechi, El-Rufai, and Atiku Abubakar are reported to have already stepped away from their former political platforms.
