Popular social activist Martins Otse, better known online as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has finally broken his silence following his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His statement comes after days of public speculation about the nature of his arrest and the allegations against him.
In a video currently circulating across social media platforms, VDM is seen sitting in a vehicle next to his lawyer, human rights activist Deji Adeyanju. Calm but visibly puzzled, he addresses the camera, raising questions about the accusations of money laundering leveled against him.
“How would they level allegations of money laundering on someone who doesn’t have money? I have done so many charity, they wonder how, they don’t know I use debt for charity,” he said.
The arrest of VDM had triggered widespread reactions from his supporters and the online community. Many expressed confusion about how someone known for his outspoken nature and modest lifestyle could be linked to financial crimes. VDM is particularly known for using his platform to call out perceived injustices and promote grassroots causes, often showing proof of his charitable activities.
His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, who appeared calm beside him in the video, has not yet released an official statement regarding the EFCC’s decision or the next legal steps. However, VDM noted that his release marks the beginning of a new chapter in his efforts to clear his name and continue his work.
The social media activist also suggested that his charitable work may have contributed to the scrutiny he now faces, as critics and officials alike may not understand how he manages to provide support to people despite his lack of personal wealth.
“Anyway, we are outside, with my lawyer of course,” he concluded with a wry smile, hinting at relief but also a readiness to keep fighting for what he believes in.
