I’m Qualified To Be Governor – Obasa

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has clarified his stance on rumors about his interest in contesting the governorship of Lagos State. Speaking on Thursday, Obasa dismissed claims that he was actively pursuing the governorship position, emphasizing that his primary focus remains on strengthening his political party.

Obasa addressed the issue during a plenary session shortly after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the proposed 2025 Lagos State budget, totaling over N3 trillion.

Responding to speculation about his political ambitions, Obasa stated, “I have made it a personal task to mobilise people on the platform of Mandate, which has been misconstrued by some political detractors as being a selfish aspiration on the ground for me to become governor of the state.”

He reaffirmed his dedication to advancing the party’s growth, adding, “Becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run.”

Addressing accusations about his family background being used to bolster his political profile, Obasa clarified that he has no need for local validation to run for office. He expressed pride in his heritage, stating, “If eventually I am contesting, I will do so from Agege.”

During the session, a vote of confidence was passed in favor of Obasa by all present lawmakers.

Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu unveiled the 2025 budget, titled the “Budget of Sustainability,” which allocates N1.239 trillion (41%) for recurrent expenditures and N1.766 trillion (59%) for capital projects. The governor outlined a plan to generate over N2.5 trillion in revenue, with the remaining deficit to be financed through loans and bonds.

Obasa praised the governor’s efforts, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful about economic recovery under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
