INEC Reveals Date For Anambra Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set Saturday, November 8, 2025, as the date for the next governorship election in Anambra State.

The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja on Thursday.

While addressing the meeting, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the Commission’s commitment to preparing for future elections, stating, “While we prepare for the Ondo State governorship election, we remain mindful of our responsibilities regarding upcoming elections and electoral activities.”

He explained that the Commission has already begun preparations for the Anambra election, ensuring that all required processes are followed according to the law.

The election date follows the guidelines set out in Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires INEC to issue election notices no later than 360 days before the election.

Prof. Yakubu clarified that the last governorship election in Anambra was held on November 6, 2021, meaning the next election is due in 2025.

“The Commission has approved that the 2025 Anambra State governorship election will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025,” he confirmed.

According to the INEC timetable, the formal notice for the election will be published on November 13, 2024, marking the official countdown to the election.

Political parties will conduct their primaries between March 20 and April 10, 2025, after which the portal for candidate nominations will open on April 18, 2025, and close on May 12, 2025.

The final list of candidates will be published on June 9, 2025, and campaigning will be allowed to begin on June 11, 2025. Campaigning will end on November 6, 2025, two days before the election.

Voting will take place across Anambra’s 5,720 polling units on the scheduled election day, with INEC assuring the public that all necessary details, including information on voter registration and replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), will be shared soon.

During the meeting, Prof. Yakubu also discussed the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, noting that INEC has successfully completed most of the planned activities. He mentioned that only a few steps remain before the election, including the publication of the Notice of Poll, the last day for campaigning, and Election Day itself.
