The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has launched a focused two-day training program aimed at equipping key officials from the Nigerian Military and representatives from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) with the tools needed to develop a sustainable blue economy in the country.
The training kicked off on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the IMION Auditorium inside the NNS QUORRA Naval Base in Apapa, Lagos. A total of 18 participants are attending the event, which spans Thursday and Friday.
Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia, the Director of the Institute, welcomed the participants and explained the motivation behind the initiative. He noted that the training is part of a strategic effort to protect and promote one of Nigeria’s most valuable resources — its ocean and coastal areas.
Udofia stated, “Your presence here signals a shared commitment to a future where economic growth and ocean health are not in conflict but in harmony.”
He pointed out the crucial role oceans play, covering over 70 percent of the Earth’s surface. According to him, oceans are vital not only for marine biodiversity and food supply but also offer great opportunities for long-term economic development if managed wisely.
The training program includes sessions on sustainable marine development, marine governance, new technologies, and climate-smart approaches to managing maritime resources. Experts from various sectors will share knowledge and practical tools for implementing these strategies.
Udofia said the goal is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the blue economy and how to apply it in policy and operations. “Our objective is to equip leaders and decision-makers with the tools and understanding necessary to shape a resilient blue economy framework for Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea region,” he said.
He added that sustainable practices in ocean use are no longer just an environmental concern but also a business necessity. Participants were urged to see the ocean as more than a resource to exploit — but rather an ecosystem to protect for future generations.
The director also expressed appreciation to Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, for his continued support and leadership in enhancing Nigeria’s maritime development efforts.
