Insulting People Online Now a Crime – Police Warns

The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning against the use of abusive language or curses online, highlighting that such actions fall under cyberbullying, which is a criminal offence in the country.

This clarification was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement shared on X.com on Friday, December 20, 2024.

Adejobi explained that the act of raining curses on individuals online is not a simple matter of free speech or criticism but constitutes a serious offence under the law.

He emphasized that such behaviour crosses the boundaries of acceptable conduct on social media platforms and should be treated as a punishable crime.

In his statement, Adejobi wrote: “Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not expression of freedom or criticism. And cyberbullying, which is even different from defamation, is a criminal offence and punishable. Be guided.”
