IPOB Slams Prosecution, Media Over “False” Report on Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have raised strong concerns over recent developments in the trial of their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, currently taking place at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a detailed statement released on Tuesday, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, criticized both the legal process and some media reports they say misrepresent facts from the courtroom.

The group specifically addressed a report claiming that Kanu confessed to inciting violence against police officers. IPOB called this claim false and misleading, arguing that the statement had no connection to the actual proceedings.

They described the article as a misrepresentation that twisted courtroom discussions to fit a false narrative.

A major part of IPOB’s objection centers on the prosecution witness identified as PW2-BBB. According to IPOB, the testimony from this individual lacked any form of credible documentation or supporting evidence.

The group further questioned the witness’s identity, stating there was no clarity about whether he truly worked with the State Security Service (SSS) as claimed.

IPOB also noted that the prosecution, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Awomolo, had not followed standard legal procedures.

They said that important court documents were still missing, despite being due long before the court date. This reportedly caused concern for the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, who reminded the prosecution to adhere to proper legal steps.

During the session, Kanu told the court he did not recognize the witness, casting doubt on the value of the testimony.

IPOB said this should have raised a red flag for any fair observer. They also warned media outlets to avoid publishing stories that could mislead the public, especially on issues with such serious legal and political consequences.

In spite of the challenges, IPOB noted that Justice Omotosho had maintained a level-headed and law-abiding approach throughout the proceedings. The group praised the judge for making efforts to ensure a fair and balanced hearing.
