The outgoing Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, addressed rumors that Governor Godwin Obaseki had fled the state. Shaibu’s comments came on Tuesday, November 12, just a day after Obaseki’s official tenure ended, as the state prepared for the handover to the newly elected Governor, Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The rumors about Obaseki’s supposed disappearance began circulating ahead of the handover, with some claiming that the Governor had gone into hiding to avoid possible arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). These claims have been denied by Obaseki’s team, but the situation has raised many questions.
Shaibu, who has had a strained relationship with the outgoing Governor, confirmed that he has not seen or communicated with Obaseki in several days. “The governor and I have been a little bit apart… I’ve not seen him for the past four days, I’ve not heard from him as he doesn’t communicate with me and we don’t talk to each other,” Shaibu said in an interview with Channels Television.
