Joao Pereira to Take Over as Sporting Lisbon Coach After Amorim’s Departure to Manchester United

Sporting Lisbon has confirmed that Joao Pereira will become the new head coach, following Ruben Amorim’s recent move to Manchester United.

The Portuguese champions announced on Monday that the 40-year-old Pereira, who previously served as Sporting’s reserve team coach, will take over the reins.

This change comes as Amorim prepares to take on a major challenge in the English Premier League after a successful period at Sporting.

Amorim’s last game with Sporting saw the team rally impressively from a two-goal deficit to secure a 4-2 victory against Braga. This win kept Sporting’s perfect start to the Primeira Liga season intact, highlighting the strength and resilience that Amorim built within the team.

Pereira, a former Portugal international and Sporting player himself, now steps up as head coach, promising to bring his experience and leadership to the first team.

Sporting celebrated Amorim’s achievements, including their memorable league title in 2021, which was Sporting’s first in 19 years, and last season’s successful title defense.

Under Amorim, Sporting also saw significant progress in Europe, sitting second in their Champions League group after a convincing 4-1 victory over Manchester City in his final home game.

Pereira’s first press conference as head coach is set for later Monday, where he will outline his vision for the team moving forward.
