June 12: National Assembly Complex Gets New Look Ahead of Tinubu’s Visit

The National Assembly complex in Abuja appeared noticeably transformed on Thursday, just hours before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned appearance for a joint session with the Senate and the House of Representatives.

When our reporter visited the premises, it was clear that preparations were in full swing. Several parts of the building had been freshly decorated.

Inside the White House section of the complex—which hosts both the Senate and House chambers—large billboards bearing congratulatory messages were placed at different entry points. These displays featured the national colours of green and white, giving the entire space a festive atmosphere.

Landscaping work had also been done. Plants, flowers, and shrubs around the Assembly grounds were trimmed neatly. Workers were seen moving around the premises, adding finishing touches to ensure the place looked ready for the president’s visit.

Security was another noticeable change. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies were stationed across different areas of the complex. This increased presence follows reports of planned protests in the capital, prompting officials to heighten safety measures around the event.

President Tinubu’s visit is part of activities lined up for this year’s Democracy Day, marking 26 years since Nigeria returned to democratic rule. Unlike previous years, however, there will be no national broadcast from the Presidential Villa.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation released a statement on Wednesday explaining the change. According to the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the president decided to speak directly to the National Assembly instead of giving a traditional address to the nation.

“Due to President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” Imohiosen said.
