The President is expected to attend a special event at the National Assembly on June 12, 2025, and confer national honours on selected lawmakers.
Akin Rotimi Jr., the spokesperson of the House, shared the details of the upcoming programme, noting that it will mark this year’s Democracy Day with a focus on the contributions of the legislative arm to Nigeria’s democratic development.
The event will feature a joint sitting of the National Assembly, with President Bola Tinubu serving as the special guest of honour.
Rotimi stated that the theme for this year’s Democracy Day is “26 Years of Democracy: Renewing Our Commitment to National Development.” He noted that the gathering will not only include an address from the President but also goodwill messages from past leaders of the National Assembly.
According to Rotimi, “The programme will also feature goodwill messages from former presiding officers of the National Assembly and the conferment of national honours on select legislators by Mr President.”
The joint session, which will bring together both chambers of the National Assembly, is intended to celebrate over two decades of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria. It will also provide a platform to reflect on the nation’s progress and renew collective commitment to its future.
Rotimi described the joint sitting as a historic moment that reflects the central role of the legislature in promoting democracy, accountability, and national unity. He said the day serves as a chance for both leaders and citizens to reflect on the country’s path and recommit to building a stronger and more united Nigeria.
He called on all Nigerians to see Democracy Day as more than a public holiday, urging them to view it as a reminder of their role in shaping the country’s democratic future.
