JUST IN: Akwa Ibom Commissioner Resigns After Governor’s Defection to APC

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, has officially stepped down from his position following Governor Umo Eno’s move to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ememobong made this known through a Facebook post shared on Thursday, stating that his decision to resign was based on personal political beliefs and in response to a directive from the governor.

The governor reportedly instructed that all appointees who are not ready to follow him to the APC should exit their roles. Responding to this, Ememobong wrote, “Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive that his appointees who are unwilling to join him on the political journey to the APC should resign.”

Ememobong, who has been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for years, noted that he could not shift allegiance to the APC. He described his choice as one built on personal values and his long-standing position against the ideology of the APC. “While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s personal decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn. My decision is borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform, which is daily validated by numerous Nigerians across many sectors,” he said.

He also made it clear that this move was not the result of any conflict with Governor Eno. “This decision does not affect my personal relationship with the Governor, who calls me his brother and reposed great confidence in me by saddling me with two very important ministries (Information and Special Duties & Ibom Deep Sea Port),” he wrote.

Despite his resignation, Ememobong expressed deep gratitude to both Governor Eno and former Governor Udom Emmanuel. He credited them for giving him the opportunity to serve the state at high levels. “Let me convey the very sincere appreciation of my family to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, for appointing me into his cabinet. Our very special appreciation goes to Mr Udom Emmanuel, the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for his enduring love and belief in me, especially for appointing me into the Executive Council during his administration,” he stated.

Ememobong took time to reflect on his time in government, saying he was proud of his record. He said he hoped the public would understand his decision, even if it didn’t sit well with everyone. “Given another opportunity, I will do more,” he added. “I understand this decision may not please everyone, and to those who are disappointed, I humbly seek your understanding.”
