Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has spoken publicly for the first time since the passing of his beloved wife, Patience Eno, who died on September 26, 2024, following a brief illness. The Governor, deeply grieving, took time to address the people of Akwa Ibom in an emotional broadcast, sharing new details about his late wife and reaffirming his commitment to continuing her legacy.
Governor Eno began by expressing the deep sorrow he and his family are feeling over the loss of Patience, whom he fondly remembered as “everything a man could ever wish for in a virtuous woman.” Describing their 38-year marriage, the Governor reflected on the bond they shared, highlighting her role as his “prayer partner, counsellor, cheer-leader, best critic, homemaker, and permanently smiling.” His words painted a picture of a loving and devoted wife who stood by his side through all their years together.
The Governor also touched on Patience’s commitment to serving the people of Akwa Ibom, particularly through her charity work. He pledged to ensure that the projects she cared about would continue to grow, mentioning her key initiative, The Golden Initiative for All, which focuses on helping vulnerable groups in the state. “We will pursue everything she held dear while she was with us,” Governor Eno vowed, promising that her vision for helping others would live on through his administration.
During the broadcast, Governor Eno also took a moment to reassure the people of Akwa Ibom that, despite the personal tragedy, the affairs of the state would continue without interruption. He emphasized that his late wife would have wanted him to remain focused on the task at hand. “This is what Kemi (the Yoruba word for Patience) has always prayed for,” he said, underscoring the importance of moving forward with strength and dedication.
Governor Eno also expressed gratitude on behalf of his family for the overwhelming support, prayers, and condolences they had received from the people of Akwa Ibom and Nigerians across the country.
