JUST IN: Edo Governor Okpebholo to Probe Obaseki’s Administration

In his first major address as the newly inaugurated Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo announced plans to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki. The focus of the inquiry will be the controversial denial of 14 elected lawmakers their rightful seats in the State House of Assembly in 2019.

Speaking at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Tuesday, Okpebholo highlighted the serious implications of the incident, stating that it was a significant blow to the state’s democracy. He said, “On 17th June 2019, 14 elected members of the Edo State House of Assembly were denied inauguration into the 7th Assembly. It was a big blow to our democracy.”

The newly sworn-in governor revealed that his administration would establish a panel of inquiry to investigate the reasons behind the denial, with the goal of preventing such occurrences in the future. He stressed the importance of a strong and functional legislative arm for the success of democracy.

In addition to this, Okpebholo vowed to collaborate closely with the State House of Assembly to foster unity and work toward the development of the state. He also reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening the judicial branch of government to ensure justice is served fairly and promptly.

Another key issue the governor addressed was the refusal of Obaseki’s administration to swear in three judges recommended by the National Judicial Council. Okpebholo described the delay as regrettable and instructed the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to look into the matter and take necessary action.
