The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Subomi and Wahab Okoya, sons of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, following their alleged involvement in a viral video showcasing naira abuse.
The brothers are scheduled to appear at the EFCC Lagos office in Ikoyi at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The controversial video, widely circulated on social media, shows the Okoya brothers spraying naira notes during what appears to be a promotional event for a new song.
A police officer, who was also seen holding bundles of cash in the video, has been identified and detained by the Nigeria Police Force for disciplinary action.
The EFCC has stated that the investigation aligns with its mandate to enforce Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which prohibits any form of abuse of the national currency.
Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the police, condemned the officer’s involvement in the incident, calling his actions “unethical” and affirming that measures will be taken to uphold the force’s integrity. “We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police,” he said.
