In the early hours of Monday morning, a powerful explosion rocked the secretariat of the Action People’s Party (APP) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, causing significant damage to the building. The explosion, which occurred around 1 a.m., is believed to have been caused by dynamite thrown into the building by unknown assailants.
The blast shattered windows, doors, and other property within the APP office, leaving the structure in disarray. The ceiling and fittings were also severely damaged. Some party officials were seen at the scene, discussing the incident in hushed tones.
The timing of this attack has raised suspicions, as it comes amidst rumors that the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, may be planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the APP. There are reports that Governor Fubara has become estranged from his political mentor, former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is alleged to have taken control of the PDP in the state.
An official from the APP, who requested anonymity, strongly suggested that the attack was politically motivated. “Yes, I’m a member of the APP. I was informed of the attack at about 3 am today. This is politically-motivated, and there is no two ways about it. They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits,” the official stated.
