The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced new regulations that prevent licensed flight crew members from working for multiple airlines at the same time. The decision was made following concerns raised by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) about safety risks linked to pilots and other crew members serving different airlines.
In a circular issued on November 6, 2024, and signed by Capt. Chris Najomo, the Acting Director-General of NCAA, the authority clarified that this practice is illegal. The circular stated that when pilots work for more than one airline simultaneously, it can lead to unsafe situations in aviation operations.
The NCAA explained that a pilot’s license is specific to the airline they are working for, as it is linked to the airline’s approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The authority also noted that simulators and proficiency checks approved for pilots are operator-specific, meaning they are designed to meet the requirements of a particular airline.
The circular also warned that this violation of aviation regulations will be treated seriously. The NCAA made it clear that any pilots found operating for more than one airline from November 11, 2024, will face strict enforcement actions. It also mentioned that from this date onward, flight simulator renewals will be tied to individual operators, requiring compliance with these new rules.
The NCAA’s move aims to maintain the highest safety standards in the aviation industry.
