The Federal Government has announced that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State will be closed for a short period to allow emergency repairs on its runway.
In a statement released on Saturday morning, Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), revealed that the closure is necessary due to a sudden issue affecting a key section of the runway.
“There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway. Hence, emergency repairs will be conducted on that portion of the runway from April 22nd to May 6th, 2025,” she said.
According to Orah, the closure follows standard safety procedures and regulations laid out by Nigeria’s aviation authorities. She noted that FAAN is acting swiftly to ensure the safety of all travellers while also using the opportunity to upgrade airport infrastructure.
“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” her statement added.
The decision means that all flights scheduled to land or take off from Akanu Ibiam International Airport will now be diverted to other airports within the region. FAAN has called on passengers and stakeholders to remain calm and cooperative while the repairs are ongoing.
“FAAN appeals to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. All flights to this airport will be diverted to nearby airports. We sincerely apologise for the late and unexpected notice regarding this closure,” Orah stated.
Meanwhile, airline operator Air Peace has already suspended its operations to the Enugu-based airport, citing ongoing concerns over the condition of airport infrastructure. The airline said the runway and other facilities have been a source of safety concerns for some time now.
