JUST IN: INEC Receives Petition to Recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a petition seeking to begin the recall process for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition was submitted on Monday, March 24, 2025, and was received by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan represents Kogi Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. The petition, which calls for her removal from office, was submitted by a group whose identities have not yet been made public. The reasons for the recall request have also not been fully disclosed, but the process is expected to follow legal procedures as outlined in Nigeria’s electoral laws.

A recall process in Nigeria is a complex procedure that requires strong public backing. According to the country’s laws, for a senator to be recalled, a petition must be signed by at least 50% of registered voters in the senatorial district. Once the petition is verified, INEC will organize a referendum where voters will decide if the senator should be removed from office. If the required percentage of votes is met, the senator will lose the seat.
