Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has officially assumed the position of National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), despite a recent court ruling nullifying his election. His actions have stirred controversy, as the Court of Appeal in Abuja had recently reaffirmed Ibikunle Baruwa as the legitimate leader of the union.
On Tuesday, MC Oluomo announced his assumption of office, marking the first public acknowledgment of his presidency since the legal setback. He had been elected unopposed at a union election held at the zonal secretariat in Osogbo earlier this year.
However, his presidency was invalidated by a three-member appellate panel comprising Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Nnamdi Okwy Dimgba, and Asmau Ojuolape Akanbi. The court upheld a March 11 ruling by the National Industrial Court, which declared Baruwa the rightful president.
In addition to overturning MC Oluomo’s election, the appellate court imposed a fine of N100,000 against him, favoring the respondents. Following the judgment, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana urged the federal government to enforce the court’s decision.
He specifically called on the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure Baruwa’s reinstatement.
