Senator Tahir Munguno has been appointed as the new Senate Chief Whip, replacing Senator Ali Ndume. The decision came after a voice vote in the upper chamber, following a complaint from the All Progressive Congress (APC) National Headquarters.
The complaint, read aloud by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, highlighted “unbecoming utterances” made by Senator Ndume.
Ndume had been vocal in his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, pointing out issues such as economic hardship, food scarcity, and the resulting security crisis. These critical remarks were seen as damaging to the party’s image and unity.
Senator Ndume, who represents Southern Borno, was notably absent during the session. His removal from the position of Chief Whip is part of a broader realignment within the Senate.
In addition to losing his role as Chief Whip, Ndume has also been removed from his position as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations. He will now serve as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism, a move seen by some as a demotion.
