Bello Turj, a notorious bandit leader operating in Zamfara State and its environs, has released all the individuals held captive by his group. This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday by Zagazola Makama, a counter-terrorism expert focusing on the Lake Chad Basin.
The decision to release the captives reportedly comes in response to intensified military operations targeting Turji and his network. These operations, conducted under the banners of Operation Hadarin Daji and Operation Forest Sanity, have been ramped up in recent weeks.
The Nigerian Armed Forces have carried out several airstrikes and ground offensives against key hideouts of the group in Fakai, Shinkafi, and surrounding areas.
Makama noted that these sustained military efforts have significantly weakened Turji’s group, forcing them into a defensive position. He stated that Turji’s decision to free his captives is seen as a calculated move to ease the pressure from the advancing troops and potentially avoid a direct confrontation.
“The release of the captives is being seen as a strategic move by Turji to avoid further escalation or a direct confrontation with security forces who have been closing in on him,” Makama said.
The military has maintained its determination to capture Turji, with sources reiterating their commitment to bringing him to justice. “The troops have vowed to get him whether dead or alive,” Makama further disclosed.
