The Nigerian House of Representatives is currently holding a private meeting to discuss four significant tax reform bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu.
These bills were proposed on September 3, 2024, based on recommendations from the Taiwo Oyedele-led tax reform committee.
The bills under review include the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, which aims to establish a clear fiscal framework for taxation, and the Tax Administration Bill, intended to streamline tax laws and minimize legal disputes.
Another crucial bill is the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, which proposes the replacement of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with a new agency, the Nigeria Revenue Service.
Additionally, the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill seeks to create both a tax tribunal and a tax ombudsman to enhance transparency and dispute resolution.
A lawmaker of the All Progressives Congress confirmed to PUNCH on condition of anonymity that the meeting is expected to douse tension ahead of the debate.
“Not everyone is convinced yet about the bills but there is a feeling that the intent of the Federal Government is the well-being of the economy. This meeting is to drum support for the bills,” he stated.
