Hundreds of women took to the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday in a show of support for the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. This demonstration comes just days after another group of women protested against the emergency rule and the suspension of the state’s Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
The rally began at 8 a.m. at the Garrison Bus Stop in the heart of Port Harcourt. Dressed in white attire, the women stood united as they chanted solidarity songs, calling for peace and support for the state’s leadership under the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas.
As the march progressed along Aba Road, the crowd grew larger, with participants making their way towards the Government House in the city. The women’s march comes at a time of heightened political tension in the state, following the recent suspension of Governor Fubara and the declaration of the state of emergency.
The protestors carried banners and placards, some of which read, “We support the Sole Administrator” and “Unity for Rivers State.” The mood was positive as the women expressed their confidence in the current leadership, and their belief that the emergency rule would bring stability to the state.
Meanwhile, not far from this rally, a rival group of women had earlier gathered last week, expressing strong opposition to the state of emergency. These women, under the group ‘Rivers Women for Sim,’ had protested against the suspension of Governor Fubara and the emergency declaration, arguing that it undermined the state’s democratic processes.
