The presence of heavily armed security personnel at the Lagos State House of Assembly has created a tense atmosphere as lawmakers prepare for an emergency plenary session on Monday, March 3, 2025. The session is expected to bring significant leadership changes within the Assembly.
As early as 7 a.m., security around the complex, which had already been noticeable for the past two weeks, was further strengthened. Officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the state police command took strategic positions, closely monitoring movements in and around the premises. Visitors, including Assembly staff, were subjected to thorough searches before being granted entry.
Sources revealed that newly elected Speaker Mojisola Meranda is expected to resign to make way for a new speaker in line with the political zoning arrangement, which favors a candidate from the western zone. This development follows weeks of political discussions and interventions by top members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
One Assembly staff member, speaking anonymously to VANGUARD, described the situation, saying, “The atmosphere in the Assembly this morning is very tensed with heavy security around the Assembly. It was difficult for the staff to gain access to the Assembly. It took me over an hour before I was allowed into the premises.”
Reports indicate that after a series of high-level meetings, President Bola Tinubu and senior APC leaders reached a resolution regarding the crisis at the Lagos Assembly. Their agreement ultimately led to the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, though he was given the option to resign instead of facing outright dismissal.
Sources from the Presidential Villa confirmed that prominent political figures, including former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande, former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake, and an unnamed former Lagos commissioner, were involved in the decision-making process.
