Kaduna Govt Increases Minimum Wage to N72,000, Announces Free Transport for Civil Servants

The Kaduna State government, under Governor Uba Sani, has approved a new minimum wage of N72,000 for all state civil servants, effective November 2024. This increase comes as part of a broader initiative by Governor Sani’s administration to improve the welfare of workers and assist the economically vulnerable across the state.

In an official announcement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Ibraheem Musa, highlighted that this wage adjustment aligns with Governor Sani’s longstanding commitment to advancing workers’ interests and enhancing the livelihoods of underserved communities.

According to Musa, “The decision is in line with the advancement of the interests of workers and improvement in the living conditions of the poor, vulnerable, and underserved in Kaduna State.”

Beyond the wage increase, the Governor also unveiled a new transportation program designed to further assist civil servants with their daily commute. Under this initiative, 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses will be launched to provide free transportation to state employees, helping them save on commuting costs while boosting productivity.

Governor Sani emphasized that the transportation scheme is intended to reduce financial burdens for workers, stating, “The free transportation scheme…is designed to alleviate the suffering of workers and enhance their productivity.” These buses will facilitate reliable transportation for civil servants, making it easier and more affordable for them to travel to and from their workplaces.

To ensure effective management of this transportation initiative, the Governor revealed that a Joint Management Committee would oversee operations. This committee will consist of representatives from organized labor groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), along with state government officials. According to the statement, this joint effort will ensure that the scheme remains efficient and meets the needs of the workers it is designed to support.
