Kano Governor Names Emir of Lafia as Chancellor of Northwest University

The Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has given his approval for the appointment of the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I (retd.), as the new Chancellor of Northwest University, Kano.

This appointment was made known through an official statement released on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Tofa.

According to the statement, the move is aimed at fostering stronger cooperation between Nigeria’s traditional leadership structures and the educational system. It added that the Emir’s selection as chancellor maintains the university’s approach of involving respected national figures in guiding the institution.

“By entrusting Emir Bage with the chancellorship, Northwest University, Kano, continues its tradition of drawing from Nigeria’s most accomplished and principled leaders to serve in ceremonial and advisory capacities,” the statement read.

Governor Yusuf also noted that having a retired Supreme Court justice and prominent traditional leader take on this role reflects the university’s vision for progress and high standards.

“Governor Yusuf underscored that appointing a retired Supreme Court Justice and revered traditional ruler reflects the university’s dedication to excellence, integrity, and national development,” it added.

The statement also described the Emir as a person known for justice, fairness, and his strong involvement in societal matters.

“The governor further highlighted Emir Bage’s sterling record of fairness, deep social engagement, and leadership—qualities expected to inspire the university community and help steer the institution toward greater achievements,” the statement added.

Justice Sidi Bage was born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He earned both his diploma and LLB degrees from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and became a member of the Nigerian Bar in 1981.

He started his career in the judiciary in 1982 as a magistrate, rose to become a High Court Judge by 1992, and joined the Court of Appeal in 2007. He was later appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2017.

In March 2019, he became the 17th Emir of Lafia after the passing of Emir Isa Mustapha Agwai I.

The formal letter of appointment was handed over to Emir Bage on Friday by the Chairman of the University Governing Council, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa.
