Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has presented a comprehensive 2025 budget proposal totaling N549.16 billion to the state assembly, emphasizing a strong focus on education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
Governor Yusuf made the announcement on Friday at the Kano State Assembly, highlighting the government’s intention to prioritize key social sectors to improve citizens’ quality of life.
The proposed budget allocates N312.63 billion for capital projects, while N236.53 billion is earmarked for recurrent expenses. Governor Yusuf explained that the capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio would be 57:43, allowing substantial investment in projects that support long-term development.
He noted that “most of the capital spending will be in the social and economic sectors,” with a targeted investment of over N461 billion.
Education takes the largest share of the budget, receiving N168.35 billion, or 31% of the total. Healthcare follows, with an allocation of N90.6 billion, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving essential services.
Infrastructure is also a priority, with N70.68 billion set aside, aimed at strengthening the state’s physical and economic backbone.
Agriculture, an essential sector in Kano, is allocated N21.04 billion, while smaller but crucial amounts are dedicated to Manufacturing, Commerce, Industry, and Tourism (N3.89 billion) and Environmental and Sanitation services (N15.52 billion).
Governance institutions will receive N98.24 billion, covering critical administrative functions across the state.
Reviewing the 2024 budget performance, which stood at 77%, Governor Yusuf noted that strategic measures to block revenue leakages have boosted the budget’s effectiveness. He acknowledged that this year had been challenging due to economic pressures, inflation, and the rising cost of foreign exchange, which led to widespread protests.
“It served as a big reminder of the need to be there for the youths,” he noted, adding that the state government has launched several youth-focused initiatives to address growing concerns.
